Two years after graduating from Cincinnati’s Western Hills High School, Robert Francis enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a Marine from 1960 to 1967, earning the highest grade ever in an aerial reconnaissance course. Robert Francis left the U.S. Marine Corps with the rank of First Lieutenant.
In 1968, Robert Francis earned a JD from the University of Michigan Law School. He worked as an associate in the law office of John Tommey in Ann Arbor, Michigan, until 1971, when he moved to Aspen, Colorado.
In Aspen, Robert Francis was an assistant district attorney until 1973. In 1978 he was asked by a district judge to represent the notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. He consulted with Bundy on a murder case against him, but Bundy then escaped from prison and continued on his murder spree.
In 1973, Mr. Francis went into private practice. He has been a private practitioner for over 50 years, representing clients in diverse matters from criminal to real estate law. He still has his real estate broker's license, and was once president of the Pitkin Bar Association.
Besides law, Mr. Francis served as a first responder with Aspen Mountain Rescue from 1990 to 2000. He responded to mountain accidents, saving lives in high-intensity, no-mistake environments.
Mr. Francis lives with his wife of more than 60 years. He has three children and four grandchildren. He is an accomplished water colorist and an avid student of languages.
